Over the next 3.5 hours, nearly 700 people in Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana would be dead. The F-5 intensity storm was on the ground for a stunning 219* miles. A reconstructed survey of the path, from the late Dr. Stanley Changnon, is below. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimYrIvMwoIlMshCrsPLgRgztUfnk7lD-ty0GpDZMjvQl-9V0AqwcKb9H5hN_pLl9DU6xrlDGzYvJWCAqjCm4rWNfFRGlcez3p8NOxdY64nznq_XBCTpnmb-wD5y2nIed7h_G6L4gHJpiJzaaFtn9bDvvsbMngIHh7KI7wGB5n0v9au_oRd2DsLSSnFYGiz/s2412/Screenshot%202024-03-18%20at%209.32.12%E2%80%AFAM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1670" data-original-width="2412" height="290" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimYrIvMwoIlMshCrsPLgRgztUfnk7lD-ty0GpDZMjvQl-9V0AqwcKb9H5hN_pLl9DU6xrlDGzYvJWCAqjCm4rWNfFRGlcez3p8NOxdY64nznq_XBCTpnmb-wD5y2nIed7h_G6L4gHJpiJzaaFtn9bDvvsbMngIHh7KI7wGB5n0v9au_oRd2DsLSSnFYGiz/w418-h290/Screenshot%202024-03-18%20at%209.32.12%E2%80%AFAM.png" width="418" /></a></div>The tornado was so powerful it leveled everything it touched. Consider all of the mistakes made on Maui (there were more than those listed) and there were also serious mistakes in Katrina. Only a NDRB can break this tragic cycle.</li><li>The big money is on the side of global warming catastrophism. Those of us trying to educate the public as to the truth have a very difficult time. Climate change is the only 'science' with focus groups, marketing firms, etc., with budgets to match. It is "sold" to the public like toothpaste. </li><li>The rise in temperatures is a serious issue that deserves a serious response. But, like too much of what occurs in America today, graft leads to wind and solar being installed when it should be nuclear. I even wrote a <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Warnings-Story-Science-Tamed-Weather/dp/1608320340/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1654270637&sr=1-1" target="_blank"><span style="color: #6aa84f;"><b>book</b></span></a> on the subject. I've called the NWS "one of the few essential federal agencies."<div><div><br /></div><div>Unfortunately, in recent years, the NWS's tornado warnings have become less accurate both in terms of tornado detection (known as "probability of detection" or PoP) and "lead time" (the amount of time between the warning and the arrival of the tornado). The National Weather Service, and its parent agency NOAA, have a published lead time goal of 13 minutes. The NWS routinely achieved this from 2005 to 2011. </div><div><br /></div><div>Because the United States lacks a Natural Disaster Review Board (other nations have them), we don't know all of the reasons the tornado warning program has deteriorated. But, I believe it is valuable to document these cases so that these issues may eventually be solved. I published an <a href="https://www.mikesmithenterprisesblog.com/2024/03/poorly-warned-georgia-tornado.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: red;"><b>analysis of a Georgia situation yesterday</b></span></a>.</div><div><br /></div><div>Another example of the deteriorated tornado warnings occurred last night in Arkansas. The tornado in the Hot Springs Village had a lead time of, at best, <i>negative one minute. </i>At left, is the NWS's survey done today and, at right, last night's tornado warning. The reason I stated "at best" is because at least two witnesses (one a meteorologist) said the tornado began to the west of the highway (see map on survey image). If correct, it would mean the tornado lead time was worse. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOftAb34l15PE8Gc1x3-EizRoaKQwMXAMOT4r57yg9QyyyC6RQQSEFNVlGSNqVaKpkHcq8eHhinn5ShKgwqRU9YE4CyRHmnJWhGd2QV4VkK5lsCseu_DxYNT3sjrLMkI3EtHjJhBaOGYyPhlaySmhp4Kk_4WVNUJrxnoBPiaqCepyP0n3r8oGFc6FKjmHS/s3378/Little%20Rock%20Village%20Survey%20vs%20Time%20of%20Tornado%20Warning%20(lead%20time)%203-14-24.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1988" data-original-width="3378" height="235" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOftAb34l15PE8Gc1x3-EizRoaKQwMXAMOT4r57yg9QyyyC6RQQSEFNVlGSNqVaKpkHcq8eHhinn5ShKgwqRU9YE4CyRHmnJWhGd2QV4VkK5lsCseu_DxYNT3sjrLMkI3EtHjJhBaOGYyPhlaySmhp4Kk_4WVNUJrxnoBPiaqCepyP0n3r8oGFc6FKjmHS/w399-h235/Little%20Rock%20Village%20Survey%20vs%20Time%20of%20Tornado%20Warning%20(lead%20time)%203-14-24.png" width="399" /></a></div><div>To be clear, <b>this was not a situation that lent itself to 13 to 15 minutes of lead time</b> (the research shows that amount is ideal). Per news reports, three people were killed by tornadoes in Ohio yesterday. I want to pass along some thoughts to our readers. <div><br /><div><b><u>Tornado Forecasting</u></b></div><div>Tuesday afternoon, I posted the forecast below. The base forecast came from the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center (SPC). However, I was concerned there was a risk of tornadoes farther west in Kansas. Yesterday, when it would have been extremely valuable, it was set to Arkansas (where the SPC thought the worst storms would be) rather than Indiana and Ohio where the worst tornadoes actually occurred. They also test it only on days when the threat is dynamic rather than subtle. The latter is often the more difficult to forecast. It would be beneficial if NOAA could find the computational resources to run it over the U.S. east of the Rockies daily at full resolution so we could see how good it actually is. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>This Blog's Original Forecasts and Warnings</u></b></div><div><br /></div><div>Per the statistics, we've had thousands of new readers this week.
