Red = enhanced risk of wind gusts of 60 mph or stronger.
Yellow = significant risk of thunderstorms.
In Tennessee, as of noon, more than 120,000 people are without power, and in Kentucky, more than 100,000 are without. Numbers are still climbing in both states.
As of 12:05pm, the radar shows an extended area of thunderstorms from near the Kentucky - West Virginia border to southern Tennessee.
Based on atmospheric stability data, the risk of damaging winds will increase -- especially in the red area above. Preparedness recommendations:
- Charge phones and laptops fully but take them off the charger the first time you hear thunder.
- Make sure infirm friends and relatives are cared for.
- When you hear thunder, make sure children are indoors (lightning as well as wind threat) and stay away from windows.
