More on the Nebraska Derecho

I expect a cluster of thunderstorms to develop in south central South Dakota and northern Nebraska around 5-6pm. This will enlarge and move south and east. Wind gusts of more than 90 mph are likely with these storms. In some cases, the winds may be accompanied by large hail. Hail driven my winds of this strength can cause severe damage. The forecast radar image is for the period from ~10-11pm. I will try to update later today as to the potential for the windstorms farther south and east.

So, what to do to prepare?
  • Bring in trampolines and lawn furniture.
  • Put your car in the garage or carport.
  • Make sure you have at least two sources for weather warnings.
  • Make sure you and your children and any infirm friends and relatives can get to shelter quickly.
  • Make sure cell phone and computers are charged but unplug them before the winds arrive to protect them from power surges.
  • If you have a generator, make sure it is filled with fuel and in good working order.
