Plains and Southeast Winter Storm Update

Here we go again…

A new storm will emerge in the Plains tonight and begin to move east southeast. It will then "turn left around Atlanta" and move up the East Coast.  We are going to cover this from west to east.

Plains

The storm is relatively weak at this point and doesn't have much Gulf moisture with which to work.
Above is the probability (70% in light blue) of an inch or more of accumulating snow from 6pm tonight to 6pm tomorrow evening. Most areas will have 1 to 2 inches.

South Central and Southeast

This could be a big deal.

This is the probability of one inch or more of accumulating snow from 6pm Tuesday to 6pm Wednesday.

BUT, there is a growing chance of freezing rain that may cause ice storm conditions.

This is the probability of 0.10" of glaze ice accumulating between 12:01am Monday (tonight) and 6am Tuesday. Note to residents of the DFW Metroplex:  I believe it is possible some ice may occur there tonight or early tomorrow in spite of these low probabilities. Elsewhere, it looks like the probabilities are quite good.

And, here is the probability for the 48 hours ending at 6pm Wednesday.
The deep red on the SC-NC border are 90% probabilities of at least a tenth of an inch!

AccuWeather has more here.

Suggestions

As we have learned this winter, the infrastructure for dealing with winter storms in the Southeast is not as robust as farther north. So, it is time to make preliminary preparations for snow and freezing rain.

To keep the length of this posting manageable, here are the preparations for an ice storm.

If you are planing to fly to/from or through (i.e. change planes in ATL or CLT) these cities during these times, there are suggestions here.

Extended Forecast

Yes, this storm will probably turn up the East Coast and give them another winter storm. I'll start covering that tomorrow.
