For My Friends in Winfield, Kansas

I have lots of friends in Winfield, Kansas, a pretty southern Flint Hills community.

My friend Curtis Dick posted this photo on Facebook of the "snowballs" falling out of the sky and said he hoped it would last all afternoon.

Sitting under that heavy snowfall, I'm sure it looked like a big winter storm. In fact, it was tiny. Here is what the radar looked like when Curtis took his photo.

One band of very, very heavy snow from Caldwell to Winfield, KS. Nowhere else was heavy snow falling. Not even a snowflake (all day) in Wichita.

This is why snow forecasting is so very, very difficult. Where one of these intense snow bands is going to develop is nearly impossible to forecast more than -- at best -- an hour in advance.
