2012's Top Three Weather Stories

Was asked the other day what I thought the top three weather stories were for the year just past. I suggest:

  1. Hurricane Sandy and its aftermath.
  2. The drought which will likely end up causing as much economic loss as Sandy.
  3. Precision tornado forecasting.
I think I've written enough words about Sandy.

Here is the latest drought index. The weather pattern for January looks like one where the drought may ease a bit except in the northern Plains.

The quality of tornado forecasting in 2012 was just amazing. If you'd like to read more about that topic go here and here

On a personal note, the high point was publishing my second book, When the Sirens Were Silent, the untold story of the Joplin tornado.

In sunshine and storm it was fun writing about weather and science for you. Mindy and I wish you and your family a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2013.
