Mystery Tour Guest Speaker

The Sport Leisure Vacation Tour Group was in Wichita over the past weekend and Mike Smith was a surprise mystery guest speaker on Saturday at the  recently renovated historic Drury Inn at Broadview in downtown Wichita. The group is out of Sacramento, California and has been visiting Kansas over the past week including stops to Leavenworth, Hutchinson, Wichita and Kansas City.

Mike presented Miracle at Greensburg from his book Warnings: The True Story of How Science Tamed the Weather. Mike spoke to the crowd while standing in front of a detailed mosiac mural depicting scenes from early Kansas life by the late artist Blackbear Bosin.

One of the highlights while in Wichita was seeing the 44-foot tall steel sculpture, Keeper of The Plains standing at the point where the Big and Little Arkansas rivers join together in downtown Wichita. Wichita has a rich Native American history and the name Wichita means "People of the South Wind." This land between the two rivers is sacred ground to the Native American People and is also home to the All American Indian Center. The Indian Warrior sculpture lifiting his hands up in praye rwas created by Wichitan and Native American artist Blackbear Bosin (1921-1980) in 1974. The 5-ton sculpture was placed on a pedestal base surrounded by a ring of fire and overlooks Exploration Place Museum.
