NASCAR and Lightning

I've received a number of inquiries about the recent fatality and injuries after Sunday's rain-shortened NASCAR race at Pocono. I gave an interview to The Morning Call which is the newspaper that serves that region and you can read it here.

I don't have much to add but if you'd like to post questions in the comments I'll be happy to answer them.

  1. Considering the proliferation of smart phones and the weather info that is readily available to the individual, shouldn't there be more of a focus on individual responsibility then there is?

  2. Perhaps. Were the fans told that warnings would be available and how to get them if adverse weather approached?

I do agree that it is a challenge to get people to act while the race is still in progress. Also agree that it is unreasonable to expect fans to "play meteorologist" and try to make sense of the radar themselves.
