St. Louis Tent Tragedy

The New York Times has an article about St. Louis' vulnerability to extreme weather in the context of the tent that blew over Saturday.

I found this quote from a St. Louis resident to be interesting:

“Normally, people’s reaction to tornado sirens, they think it’s somewhat benign because they go off all the time,” said James Dixson, 37, who works in marketing and lives downtown. “So when there’s a more serious occurrence, we hear it and don’t actually react.”

This is exactly what I feared last May when I criticized local St. Louis emergency management for overuse of sirens far away from any threat (video below):

Misuse of sirens is an increasing problem as I discuss in When the Sirens Were Silent my new book that is on its way to bookstore shelves.

Comments

  1. The sirens were never sounded that day before the storm that caused the tent collapse.
