No Tornadoes In February

Never mind.  As reader Patrick Marsh points out in the comments, there was a late report of a tornado in California (of all places).  The Storm Prediction Center has officially revised the number from zero to one.

Throughout February we heard that the blizzards were signs of 'global warming.' We have also heard that global warming will bring more numerous and intense tornadoes. If those two statements are true, then how can it be explained that for the first time (since records have been kept) there were zero tornadoes in the United States in February?

Hat tip:  Watts Up With That.

  1. Hi Mike,

By all accounts, there appears to have been a tornado in southern California (waterspout that came ashore) on 27 February. We learned of this late yesterday and the local office is investigating it. We have every reason to believe it is legitimate and the February tornado count will stand at 1.

PS...A single month doesn't prove or disprove climate change. El Nino & Arctic Oscillation forcing is much greater than any proposed climate change forcing when compared on the time scale of a single month.

  2. Patrick,

When the tornado count is official let me know and I will correct the post or do a new one. Thank you.

OF COURSE, a single month or incident doesn't prove or disprove 'global warming.' I am replying to that assertion by the Pro-GW camp. See www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1962294,00.html not to mention 342 articles regarding Gore's assertion (last Sunday's NY Times) that the blizzard proves GW and 600+ other articles with blizzard = GW asserted (without Gore's quote).

The pro-GW camp can't have it both ways: Every time there is an unusual event blame it on GW and when there is countervailing evidence say, "one event doesn't disprove..."

I stand by my assertion that if the storms of February 'prove' GW (as Gore says) then it is falsified by the low numbers of tornadoes, given (see article in link and numerous others) that GW = more tornadoes in number and intensity.

Anecdotal Information either way does not prove or disprove the theory. You would be saying the same if the Pro Global Warming people said that a massive heat wave was evidence of Global Warming. Personally I don't think there is such thing as man-made global warming. The climate could just be cycling but with all the controversy over data being falsified I hardly know what data to believe.

PS: I see you addressed the Use of anecdotal information in your above post.
